Two primary problems: 1) It was never meant to be a retirement or pension plan but rather a safetey net to aid individuals at retirement age. Unfortunately, about 90% of Americans have never been taught about saving or making retirement plans so they never bothered – especially the baby boomers and hippie generation. 2) The mass amount of funds that were available were raided over the last few decades and there’s nothing left but a big deficit so the system is essentially as bankrupt as so many Americans losing their homes right now.

Proposed Solutions: There aren’t any. It’s too late. BUT, Social Security is a voluntary system, not mandatory. So if you’re young, the best thing you can do is opt out and move that money to your OWN retirement solution. Of course, almost nobody knows this information. Who would tell them when the government needs your funds to make the interest payments on the deficit?
